Clune says Irish people should know their employment rights
Clune tells workers that they have rights in the workplace
In the wake of a case of an Au Pair who was awarded 10,000 euro this week for under payment of wages, Ireland South MEP and member of the EU employment committee Deirdre Clune has said that Irish workers should familiarise themselves with their rights in the workplace.
“Many workers do not know what they are entitled to and this is leading to a scenario where a minority of employers are taking advantage. Since January of this year all adult employees should be getting a minimum wage of 9.15 euro per hour. They are entitled to see a payslip and annual leave of at least 4 weeks in a year, although an employee’s contract could give greater rights.
“Most employees are entitled to paid leave on public holidays, of which there are 9 days per year. One exception is part-time employees who have not worked for their employer at least 40 hours in total in the 5 weeks before the public holiday.
“The Citizens Information website details all the rights and entitlements of employees and workers should familiarise themselves with those rules and laws so that they are getting exactly what they are entitled to get. The law clearly sets out rules on bullying and harassment in the workplace, procedures for dismissal and for employment contracts.
“Employees can take cases to the Workplace Relations Commission if they feel they have been unfairly treated at work but its important that they know their rights as a first step.
